Almost everyone has an irrational fear or two—a fear of heights, for example, or possibly a fear of spiders. These fears are situational and may cause minor inconveniences. When fears become so severe that they cause intense anxiety and interfere with your normal life, they’re called phobias. The good news is that fears and phobias can be greatly decreased, and even eliminated, through hypnotherapy.
A phobia is an intense fear of something that, in reality, poses little or no actual threat or real physical danger. Common phobias include a fear of: closed-in places; dogs or large animals; highway driving; flying insects; snakes; and needles. However, we can develop irrational fears and phobias of virtually anything. The list is endless. Most phobias develop in childhood, but they can also develop as an adult.
If you have a particular phobia, you probably realize that your fear is unreasonable, yet you still can’t control your feelings. Merely thinking about the feared object or situation may make you anxious. And when you’re actually exposed to the thing you fear, the terror is instantaneous and overwhelming.
The experience is so overwhelming that you may go to great lengths to avoid it — inconveniencing yourself, others, or even changing your lifestyle. Understanding your phobia is the first step in the process to overcoming it. It’s important for you to know that phobias are relatively common. Having a phobia doesn’t mean you are crazy, it simply means that a fear has become irrational! It also helps to know that phobias are highly manageable and can be completely eliminated through hypnosis. You can overcome your irrational fears and phobias no matter how out of control they may make you feel.
